Typical versus Worst Case

چکیده
A continuous tension exists between the day to day requirements for a new product and the requirements in exceptional cases. The System Architect must understand both requirements and be able to discuss them in terms of value in order to make a balanced product. This article gives some handles to tackle this problem. This article builds upon the paper "Requirements Capturing by the System Architect" [1]. This article is part of the deliverables of the Gaudí project [2], which will describe the entire system architecture process.

Typical versus Worst Case Design in Networking
Networking research has a strong inclination toward designing systems for the worst case scenarios. On the face of it, this seems reasonable – designing for the worst case gives strong guarantees on the system. However, this often comes with a sacrifice for the typical case performance. Drawing from our experience, this paper argues and gives evidence of the enormous benefits of typical case de...
متن کاملTypical-Case Challenges to Complexity Shields That Are Supposed to Protect Elections Against Manipulation and Control: A Survey
In the context of voting, manipulation and control refer to attempts to influence the outcome of elections by either setting some of the votes strategically (i.e., by reporting untruthful preferences) or by altering the structure of elections via adding, deleting, or partitioning either candidates or voters. Since by the celebrated Gibbard–Satterthwaite theorem (and other results expanding its ...
متن کاملQuery Complexity: Worst-Case Quantum Versus Average-Case Classical
In this note we investigate the relationship between worst-case quantum query complexity and average-case classical query complexity. Specifically, we show that if a quantum computer can evaluate a total Boolean function f with bounded error using T queries in the worst case, then a deterministic classical computer can evaluate f using O(T ) queries in the average case, under a uniform distribu...
متن کاملTypical-case Design Methodology: Concept, Challenge, and Case Study
1. The Concept: What is Typical-case Design? This abstract presents my incremental study of the paper previously published at ISQED 2007 [1]. It is expected that I will graduate in March, 2008, under the advice from Toshinori Sato at Kyushu University. The aim of my study is developing a design methodology for the advanced semiconductor technologies, where transistors are unreliable and thus pa...
متن کاملWorst case response time versus worst case offset configuration using the deadline driven scheduler
We study the worst case response in the scheduling of hard real-time periodic task sets with the deadline driven scheduler. We show that the worst case response times do not always occur in the synchronous schedule; even worse, the worst response times for the various tasks do not necessarily occur in the same asynchronous schedule.
